With his brace in Racing Genk’s 5-1 rout of Ike Ugbo’s Cercle Brugge on Saturday evening, Paul Onuachu is now the outright top scorer in the Belgian First Division A with 12 goals after 14 rounds.
Genk equalled a club record of six straight wins with their comprehensive away victory against Cercle Brugge.
A new club record would be set if Onuachu and his teammates beat Antwerp in a home match next Sunday and the Nigeria international is convinced that they are on course to set a new record.
“With a victory against Antwerp next week, we can fall into the Genk history book. Seven in a row: we should succeed,” Onuachu told HLN.
Onuachu thanked his teammates in the aftermath of his double vs Cercle Brugge and pointed out that he almost replicated his best season with FC Midtjylland.
“I am really satisfied with those twelve goals, I get an average of almost one goal per game. Because I only played thirteen, hey, I had to pass up the top match against Club Brugge.
“In my best season at FC Midtjylland I once started with eleven goals in eleven matches, this is pretty close.
“But of course you don’t make all those goals alone. Today my goals were just as much the credit of Junya Ito and Théo Bongonda, I am happy that they each poked one of them against the nets,” he concluded.
