Super Eagles will play next month’s 2023 AFCON qualifier at home without fans at the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja after FIFA imposed sanctions on Nigeria after fans went on rampage in March when the country failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup.
FIFA further fined the NFF about $154,000 for the unruly behavior of the fans when the Eagles could only draw 1-1 with arch-rivals Ghana on March 29 and exit the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
That result eliminated Nigeria from the World Cup and the fans showed their anger by storming the pitch and destroying public property.
The FIFA sanctions came on a day CAF approved the MKO Abiola Stadium to host Nigeria’s home games leading to the 2023 AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire.
Guinea Bissau and Mauritius or Sao Tome and Principe are the other teams in Group A of the qualifiers.
